Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is acclimating to the NFL at a rapid pace, according to his coaching staff.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans said it’s been “very eye-opening” how “on it” the No. 2 pick has looked during OTAs, according to Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle.

Stroud took over first-team reps from 2022 starter Davis Mills this week, Kubena adds.

“He’s definitely progressing in the right direction,” Ryans added. “The sky’s the limit for him.”

The 21-year-old also earned high praise from quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, who said the rookie is “way, way ahead of pace” in terms of technique.

Stroud was the second quarterback drafted following the Carolina Panthers’ selection of Alabama product Bryce Young at No. 1. The Ohio State standout enjoyed a highly productive college career, throwing for 85 touchdowns to 12 interceptions over his final two seasons.

Stroud will be tasked with leading a Texans franchise that has won 11 total games since 2020.
